Garden Day - "Savoring Herbs"


From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., enjoy:

Garden Tours:

  • Tour our Cook’s Garden with Open Hearth Cooks. (10 – 4; behind Hall Tavern)
  • Tour Memorial Hall Museum’s 1838 Children’s Garden with gardener Tom Mershon. (12 noon to 4; at Memorial Hall Museum)

 Herbal Cooking:

  • See cooks prepare food with herbs over an open hearth (10-4; in Hall Tavern kitchen)
  • Sample three herbal recipes to make at home.  (10-4; in Hall Tavern north parlor)

Themed House Tours:

  • Tour the Sheldon House with a focus on agriculture (ongoing, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Tour the Williams House with a focus on botanicals (on the hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Village Walks:

  • Agricultural Deerfield (departs Hall Tavern at 10:30 & 3:30)
  • Tree and Shrub Identification (departs Hall Tavern at 1:00)

Hands-on Craft Activities:

  • Seed starting; design a seed packet; make a lavender sachet (10-4; History Workshop)

 Garden Clinic:

  • Western MA Master Gardeners host a Garden Clinic to answer your questions. Includes pH soil testing. (10-4; behind Hall Tavern)

Presentations:

  • Composting and Soil Health, by John Howell, University of Massachusetts Extension School Vegetable Specialist, retired. (11:30, Hall Tavern Orientation Theater)
  • Historic Gardens, by Nancy Howell, Historic Deerfield guide and open hearth cook, and of Western Massachusetts Master Gardeners. (2:00, Hall Tavern Orientation Theater)

  

Purchase Herbs:

  • Herbs available for purchase from Hearthsong (10-4;  behind Hall Tavern)

 Botanically-inspired collections:

  • Visit the Flynt Center of Early New England Life.  (open 9:30 to 4:30)
  • Visit the Memorial Hall Museum (open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

Admission is $14 adults; $5 youth (ages 6-21); free to members and children under 6.
