Relive the Deerfield Raid of 1704 during 304th Anniversary Commemoration 

1704 Colonial Encampment Weekend, Feb. 29 - March 2

Co-hosted by Historic Deerfield and the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association

Deerfield, Massachusetts - The smell of gunpowder and sounds of battle will again fill the frigid New England air as costumed reenactors commemorate the 1704 Raid on Deerfield. More than 50 volunteers will take part in the recreation of events of events that would forever change the town of Deerfield, and impact Native and French communities. Hosted by Historic Deerfield and the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association, the 1704 Colonial Encampment Weekend will take place Feb. 29 - March 2 throughout the village.

"Over 3,000 visitors showed their interest in remembering the Raid in 2004," said Philip Zea, President of Historic Deerfield. "It proved the high level of interest people have in this important moment in American History."


The three-day event will include reenactments of the skirmish, a variety of family-friendly activities, historical demonstrations, and engaging lectures.

 

"We are committed to telling the many different perspectives - English, French, and Native - on this pivotal event in New England history." said Tim Neumann, Executive Director of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association. "This year's expanded living history event is a family-friendly way to thoughtfully commemorate 1704."

 

Friday, Feb. 29 - The 304th Anniversary

 

The weekend will begin Friday with a number of free offerings including a Commemoration Ceremony at the First Church of Deerfield, also known as the Brick Church. The ceremony will include music, readings from Deerfield captivity narratives, and memorials. In addition, visitors can take advantage of guided tours of period houses and walking tours of the village be offered throughout the day. For more information please call (413) 775-7214.

 

Saturday, March 1

 

  • 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. - "Learn About the Raid of 1704" - Watch a slideshow presentation about the major points and perspectives of the 1704 raid.
  • 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. - Colonial Reenactors -  Listen to French, Native and English reenactors share their diverse perspectives on the raid at the Old Indian House. Learn about life during the time by seeing colonial dress and material culture. Even feel free to try on clothes, play with period toys, dip candles, or card and spin wool.
  • 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. - Guided Tours - Tour the historic Wells-Thorn, Ashley, Frary, and Williams houses with one of Historic Deerfield's friendly and knowledgeable guides.
  • 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. - Open Hearth Cooking - See early English and Native foods prepared over the open hearth. 
  • 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. - Self-Guided Tours - Take a self-guided tours of the Sheldon House, Stebbins House, the Flynt Center of Early New England Life, as well as Historic Deerfield's remarkable Silver and Metalware Collection.
  • 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. - Snowshoe Making - Meet Pinock Smith who will demonstrate traditional Native technology used to make snowshoes.
  • 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. - Colonial Firearms - Survey a wide range of Colonial weapons of the 17th and 18th century.
  • 10 a.m. - Walking Tour - Meet Marge Bruchac for a walking tour of Deerfield from a native perspective.
  • 10:30 a.m. - Walking Tour - Take a walking tour of Deerfield as an English settlement.
  • 11 a.m.  -"1704: Cast of Characters" - Come meet the cast and characters of Deerfield during the historic raid in a one-on-one information session.
  • 11:30 a.m. - Opening Lecture - Listen to an opening lecture by William Fowler, author of "Empires at War: The French and Indian War and the Struggle for North America, 1754-1763,
  • 2:00 p.m. - Skirmish - Reenactors portraying Native, French and English combatants will recreate the sights and sounds of a Colonial battle.
  • 3:00 p.m. - Walking Tour - Tour the English settlement of Deerfield.
  • 3:30 p.m. - Walking Tour - Join Marge Bruchac to close the day's events with a Native Tour of Deerfield.
     

Sunday, March 2

  • 1:00 p.m.- Slideshow Presentation - Enjoy a glimpse of what a captive's journey may have looked like in 1704. Naturalist Allison Bell retraced the route to Canada in 2003 and shares her photographic account of the journey.
  • 2:00 p.m. - Skirmish - Reenactors portraying Native, French and English combatants will recreate the sights and sounds of a Colonial battle.
  • 3:00 p.m. - Walking Tour - Tour the English settlement of Deerfield.
  • 3:30 p.m. - Walking Tour - Join Marge Bruchac to close the day's events with a Native Tour of Deerfield.


All events will take place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily. Special Event Admission: Friday, February 29 - free; Saturday & Sunday, March 1 & 2, $14 Adults (19+), $5 Youth (12-18), under 12 and members of Historic Deerfield or PVMA, free. Tickets purchased Saturday, March 1, will be good for both days. All events are subject to change without notice, skirmish is weather dependent. Winter Hours

From January 5, 2008 to March 23, 2008 the Flynt Center of Early New England Life is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Historic Deerfield's museum houses are closed to the public during the winter months (January-March), although pre-arranged tours-by-appointment and group tours can be scheduled.
