The 2012 summer lecture series “Digging for Truth: Uncovering Early African American Presence and Experience in the North,” is jointly sponsored by Historic Deerfield and the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association (PVMA). All presentations are free and open to the public.

This summer we will explore the ancient and versatile flax plant and its many uses. Try your hand at braking, scutching and hetcheling last summer’s crop and learn about all the steps and tools involved in dressing flax¾or turning it into cloth. Joanne Pope Melish, Associate Professor of History, University of Kentucky, will give the first of the three lectures in the summer lecture series “Digging for Truth: Uncovering Early African American Presence and Experience in the North”on July 12.
The second lecture in the summer lecture series “Digging for Truth: Uncovering Early African American Presence and Experience in the North” will feature Alexandra Chan, Site Archaeologist, co-presenting with Thomas Lincoln, Executive Director, both from the Royall House and Slave Quarters, Isaac Royall House Museum, Medford, Mass. on July 19.
Warren R. Perry, Professor of Anthropology, Central Connecticut State University and Archaeological Director of The Archaeology Laboratory for African and African Diaspora Studies, will deliver the lecture in the summer lecture series “Digging for Truth: Uncovering Early African American Presence and Experience in the North” on July 26.
