  • Napoleonic Bee Pendant on Chain

When Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) took up residence in the Royal Palace at Tuileries, he refused to spend money on new decor.  However, he could not allow the drapery - with its embroidered fleur-de-lis (the French Royal Sympbol) - to continue to hang in the windows.  His solution was to have the rich, elegant drapes turned upside down.  The inverted symbol of the overthrown monarchy looked like a bee.  From then on, the tenacious bee became the emblem of Napoleon Bonaparte.

  • Pine-Tree Shilling Pendant

Johnny tremain and The Sons of Liberty were said to have worn this coin around their necks as a secret identification during the Revlution.  The Tree Shilling was made from 1652 to 1682 at the Saugus Iron Works in Massachusetts, the principal trading colony.  Because colonists did not have the legal right to make currency, the British halted this coinage in 1682 in the hope that this action would prevent the colonists from becoming too independent.  American, mid-17th century.

  • Sheaf of Wheat Pendant

During the Federal era, renowned Salem, Massachusetts architect and master woodcarver Samuel McIntire (1757-1811), defined many of the symbols of his young nation.  This elegant sheaf of wheat, a symbol of prosperity both then and now, is from McIntire’s 1804 Gardner-Pingree House, part of the Peabody Essex Museum.  Working in the neoclassical style, McIntire employed a variety of decorative devices, such as baskets of fruit and sheaves of wheat, as signs of wealth in the community of Salem which was brought about by extensive trade with Asia.
