Weekends, History Workshop Building
The quill pen as a tool for writing came into use as early as the seventh century and remained the most popular writing instrument in the Western World for over a thousand years. Even after the invention of the metal nib, quills were the preferred choice by many writers who appreciated beautiful penmanship and the flexibility and ease of a quill. Come to the History Workshop and learn to write with a quill pen. Practice cursive or printing with a goose quill, write on special “aged” paper using our own ink and take home your writing sample! Learn about the ingredients of ink, how quill pens were made and sharpened and read some quill pen writing from Historic Deerfield’s Manuscripts Collection.
