Silken Inspirations: The Hands-on History of Silk

Weekends, History Workshop Building

Silk is one of the most beautiful of all fibers --- so beautiful in fact that textiles from silk have always been considered a special luxury. Historic Deerfield’s Costume and Textile Collection reflects the exquisite silks owned by elite Deerfield families. We invite visitors to be inspired by the collection and come to the History Workshop to learn about the fascinating process of making silk fiber into thread. Visitors can see live silkworms, reel cocoons, and enjoy the unique opportunity of painting on silk. Silk painting is a take home project fun for all ages.

(Special Note:  Visitors are encouraged to visit the Flynt Center of Early New England Life where they will find other examples of silk in the current the lobby show: Inspired Design: Asian Decorative Arts and Their Adaptations and in The Helen Geier Flynt Textile Gallery: Celebrating the Fiber Arts).
