Fun with Broken Dishes: Massachusetts Archaeology Month Family Program

Come to the History Workshop today and have fun puzzling pieces of broken pottery back together. Work together to put cups, plates, mugs and bowls back together with tape. Learn how archaeologists use this process in the lab to learn more about the time period and the people they are studying. Archaeologists call this “mending” – we call it fun!

Compose your next literary masterpiece at Historic Deerfield with this facilitated writing exercise. Our staff will help children ages 10 and up learn the elements of fiction, and then write a story: will they rewrite a famous work of literature? Will they create their own story set in atmospheric Old Deerfield? Let your imagination flourish in our unique setting.

Come to the History Workshop and learn to write with a quill pen.  Practice cursive or printing with a goose quill, write on special “aged” paper using our own ink and take home your writing sample!  Learn about the ingredients of ink, how quill pens were made and sharpened and read some quill pen writing from Historic Deerfield’s Manuscript Collection.

Tea Time, Any Time: All About Tea

This summer we will have tea time every day at the History Workshop!  Learn about the rich global history of tea and join us in sampling black tea, green tea, and herbal tea. See our indoor Camellia sinensis tea plant, then visit our garden to pick mint and lemon balm, popular herbs for tea.  Make a tea bag of black or herbal tea to take with you, practice proper tea etiquette, and choose some recipes for traditional foods eaten at tea time.
