Come learn about a unique element of Washington’s Continental Army. Unlike the British Army, which had a grenadier company in each infantry regiment, the Continental Army had few grenadiers—only one or two regimental companies, plus one or two militia grenadier companies that predated the Revolution. The grenadiers of the 26th Continental Regiment wore a woolen cap embroidered with “GW” for George Washington and “REGIMENT XXVI,” as seen on a surviving cap in the collection of the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian. The group is making coats of distinctive reddish “London Brown” wool, faced in pale buff, with pewter buttons bearing the number “26,” along with grenadier caps.
